We were actually very, very open with ...Anonymous,

We were actually very, very open with our 7 year old. He caught on very quick that the Native Americans were already there and the Pilgrims were trying to "take" the land away from them. We try to not ever paint a picture of only the good as it pertains to the "white settlers." We have been open about this with him since we first started talking about Thanksgiving, late Pre-K ish. I did not, however, mention it in this post, which was not intentional, actually. I feel it is important to discuss US history, the good and the bad and our oldest son is usually VERY perceptive to stories like this. He often listens to a story and asks the "why?"s that no one wants to answer :) but we do and we are very open with him.Amberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11284090873794530720noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20360839.post-72377321696626311262011-11-17T22:01:24.281-08:002011-11-17T22:01:24.281-08:00I wonder at what age and time you find it appropri...I wonder at what age and time you find it appropriate to discuss with your children the reality of what happened after the first Thanksgiving. While I appreciate that everyone likes a happy story, I also dislike that we skip over the ugly reality in favor of a very short-lived peacefulness when there is so much more to the story. So last year when my five year-old came home from preschool with the extremely simplified story of Thanksgiving, we had an honest and open conversation about all of it. I don't mind celebrations of thankfulness but I also think it is important to be truthful with ourselves, our nation, and our kids about events that transpired. None of that to be construed as criticism of your approach here, but just honestly wondering at what age other parents introduce the not-so-flattering truth about Native American and U.S. relations that followed the thanksgiving story.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
